12:46 am - Mandatory Post
I'm a Boston boy, born and bred, and I've had spells of cheering on the Bruins, the Celtics, and the Pats (remember "Squish the Fish?"), but my heart has always been and always will be with the Red Sox.

For the second time in four years, they have come from a significant deficit in the American League series and gotten to the World Series. For the second time in four years, they have swept the World Series.

Rock on.

12:55 pm - Free Tacos and Baseball
This will surprise no one, but I am keenly following the World Series, given that my beloved Red Sox are battling with the Rockies for the second world championship title in three years (or eighty-eight years, depending on your perspective). Last night's game was really encouraging, as I hadn't expected the Sox to have the difficulties that they did with the Indians. Apparently, they just don't like winning the World Series without coming from behind in the league championship series? ...or perhaps a week-long break doesn't do a team good when they've been on a winning tear the way that the Rockies have been.

Either way, the tension was sufficiently gone by the fifth inning that my friend Chase reported that the Fox announcers were debating if America will get a free taco. Paraphrasing him, if the announcers are talking about free tacos during a World Series game, it's gotten pretty brutal.

Also paraphrasing him, this now has me wanting a taco.

For those in the Bloomington area, I'm likely to be watching the rest of the games. Comment here if you'd be interested in doing so with me. I'm thinking Crazy Horse, but I might just break down and invite folks over to watch the game on our TV. Watch this space for more details.

In other news, I'm not dead, and I should be posting more soon. Hopefully.

01:40 pm - Baseball! Pizza! Hilarity!
My friend Chase pointed me to this wonderful story of fun at Fenway yesterday. Watch the video. Really. Do it. It's worth it just for Don Orsillo cracking up as they come back from the commercial break.

03:03 pm - Oh Dear God....
I clearly should have waited a few more minutes to post about that champagne, as the Internet served up another atrocity mere minutes later: Green Monster Games. Apparently, Curt "Hard Core Red Sox Pitcher" Schilling, R. A. "Loves Drow" Salvatore, and Scott "Meglomaniacal Action Figure Mogul and Sometime Comic Artist" McFarlane are getting together to make a computer game studio.

Um ... who's been doling out the crack up in Beantown?

05:00 pm - Disgustingly Cute Wedding
So [info]swan_tower and I just got back from [info]eclectician and [info]latvianchick's wedding in Boston. (For those Boston natives reading this, we do love you, but we were only in town for about 48 hours, and a number of those were claimed by my family wanting to actually see us in the flesh for dinner.) We saw a number of the Harvard crowd, which was awfully nifty, and the ceremony itself was quite touching and low-key. Given the couple, it should surprise no one that the food there was excellent.

I, meanwhile, was at least vaguely productive, plowing through about eight inches on the scarf I've been knitting for my aunt since forever ago. It's a relatively thin yarn, but even with that as an excuse, I can't explain why I've taken nearly a year on this thing. I seem to make the most progress on my knitting when I'm on airplanes, for some reason.

[info]swan_tower and I also wandered around a bit, looking at potential sites for the wedding. There are a few more that we'll probably scout out before settling on a place, at which point we should be able to start telling people a (tentative) date.

Other than that, not much is going on. I'm probably going to spend much of the rest of the evening working on Strange Horizons submissions, though I may take a break to set up some of the new computer equipment I got on Friday. (A new LCD monitor and a new inkjet, for the record.)

10:35 am - Boston and Superman
Two things:
  • [info]swan_tower and I will be in Boston from this evening until Wednesday, at which point I head back to Bloomington and she stays for Readercon. It's unlikely that we'll be able to be that social, but if you're a Boston-area person and would like to try to get together with us, email me, and I'll see if we can figure something out.
  • We also saw Superman Returns last night, and it was surprisingly good, all things considered. It works off the assumption that Superman III and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace didn't happen, and that Supes left Earth for five years after astronomers found the ruins of Krypton. (Note that the only thing I'm really spoiling here is the first five minutes, so nyah.) Spacey was a great Luthor, Routh was a solid Man of Steel, and Bosworth was a competant Lane.

01:31 pm - Holiday Cheer
So I'm in Holliston, having returned to my folks' place for the Christmas season, dragging [info]bneuensc along for the ride. As is their wont, my family is promising to be rather possessive, so folks who live in the Boston area might not see us much this trip, unfortunately.

On the flip side, for the first time in nearly a decade, it looks as if the whole Bryant clan (my mother's side of the family) is coming together. All my cousins, aunts and uncle, and grandmother.

On some levels, I feel bad for [info]bneuensc, really.

In any case, if I don't show up online in the near term, I hope everyone out there in LJ-land has a Merry Hannachristmakwanzaa and a Happy New Year. Then again, I may escape to the solace of the Internets to escape the crazy of the family, so I might post a lot more.....

03:44 pm - Still Battling the Plague / Update
I've been fighting some sort of flu bug since Thanksgiving, along with just about everyone I know. Word to the wise: don't catch it. It's a pain.

This week has already been rather busy, and things don't look likely to let up.

For what it's worth, I will be in Boston for Christmas, but my family is rather possessive, and my time hanging with friends is almost certain to be limited.

That said, a meme....

Oh Great Cthulhu! )

03:11 pm - Travel, Travel Everywhere
So this weekend, I made the obligatory trip to visit my family. My mother and one of my aunts were born fairly close to the 4th, so it has a combined importance in my family as a holiday only rivaled by Christmas and (possibly) Thanksgiving. This, combined with the fact that I hadn't been in Boston since November, instilled in me a fear that I would be bodily abducted if I didn't try to make an appearance.

Wherein our hero recounts his exploits.... )

03:07 am - Unreasonable
I have determined empirically that 3am is an unreasonable hour of the morning to have to get up. Particularly for travel.

Ugh. It makes me consider falling off the decaffeination wagon.

11:23 am - A Trip To Beantown
It appears as if I will be heading to Boston for the weekend of the 4th after all, despite much confusion. I'll be heading in on Friday, spending the weekend with the overly-demanding family in the 'burbs, and then heading into town Monday evening or Tuesday morning to spend time with friends for a bit and leaving Wednesday afternoon.

At all times, I should have reasonably good access to email, so it is still a good way to reach me.

For Boston-area people, I would be interested in doing stuff Tuesday all day and Wednesday morning. When might folks be available?

01:47 pm - Links, Whatnot
I've been somewhat busy this last week or so, doing prep-work for the one-shot LARP I'm going to be running next month and catching up on Strange Horizons work.

I have, however, found some nifty things. First off, for you Bostonians (and particularly [info]that_cad), I offer Medieval Boston [via MeFi]. Phenomenal pictures. Beautiful stuff. Might be fodder for an entry on Bostonia, eh?

Also, via my friend Chase, a nifty T-shirt. They're reprinting this one, apparently.

For classicists, I note that they've found a new Sappho poem [also via MeFi].

Via [info]jwz, photos of NYC nightlife in the 70s (definitely NSFW).

Also, Mobile Magazine is doing a "top 100" best forgotten gadgets as a followup to their top 100 gadgets of all time story. [Via robotwisdom.]

I may fill up some more posts with stuff about the Bes Din game for the non-locals.
